Session Ideas

In keeping with our idea of avoiding too much pre-structuring of the day, we are not going to ask people to formally announce session titles etc. However we do want to get some idea of the areas people want to [a] hear about and [b] talk about. If the day works well, those two things will merge. Rest assured that if you want to talk on something, you will get the opportunity.

We have one or two things which will require some setup in advance and we’ll highlight those because they will need your help.

In the meantime, just use the comments section below to suggest ideas and mention topics you want to take part in. I’ll kick it off.

I’d like to hear about successes/failures in replacing/supporting “traditional” ways of doing things with technology.

This could include:

Virtual art
Electronic white-boards in schools
Internet usage in remote areas of Africa
Taking the seti@home approach to earthquake detection
Crowdsourcing detailed local maps with “streetviews” using GPS-enabled phones
Average people modelling buildings/areas/towns
Building useful tools for anyone to access central government and local government data via open APIs

I request a room with two or more walls, wired internet access and no more than 20 chairs for a presentation about how to stop people from conversing online. I would like the room configured as suggested so a team of third level students can record and stream the session.

I would like to suggest Bart do a session on getting started with Django and have people bring along bits of code so he can do a code review and suggest ways of doing things better. I always find doing real project is the quickest way to learn and its those steps after doing the online tutorials where I can get stuck.

I’d be happy to talk about the importance of change in communication on the web. Particular video and web conferencing live and recorded. Video is becoming big and I have a spend a lot of time looking into this and making it easy for business. I wont pitch it to the audience just my honest opinion and experiences over last years and what changes are happening. We are breaking down the existing conventions in this area and show that this is possible and relevant for everybody.

I wonder if some kind of speed networking session could be tied into Barcamp Cork? Personally speaking I’m not the most outward-going person in the world and find myself at Barcamps gravitating towards people I recognize/know. And I know I’m not the only one - it seems to be a fairly common geek trait!. So perhaps one session dedicated to speed networking for those who’d like to make new contacts (like me) in a less awkward manner. Just do it like speed-dating - eg. divide the attendees into two even groups, allow 2 or 3 minutes for each pair to chat, ring the bell, everyone moves to the next person in line, etc,.

[Yes, I have been speed-dating and it works great :)]

I would like to see a session about copyright, Intellectual Property rights and digital rights in a digital world.

What the challenges and opportunities people see in an environment which is still in the process of accommodating technological advances to established cultural norms?

How we got to where we are now, from a legal framework perspective, and how suitable/adaptable this will be going forward?

An examination of the ethics of the online community to copyright infringement/sharing of digital content and how to square the circle of localised rights agreements versus a globalized distribution system.

What is the perceived culture of sharing of content within online communities versus the actual culture?

Do people see lifestyles adapting to spending more time online, therefore making these rights issues worth considering or will people get bored of this “Interweb thingy” eventually and all these issues go away?

More than happy to kick it off and stand back.

I’d be interested in giving a talk on the whole process of selling websites/applications to companies including the initial call, meetings, proposals, contracts, closing the sale, your body language, charging more with confidence, etc.

I really like the idea of the speed networking - definitely should try that out.

Hi, I have a few ideas about internet in remote regions, e.g. what us is it to people who have bad water (if any) and not much food? Also how we could use web2 features in a local network specifically for local comms between villages. Basically anything anyone can think of that might enhance our ’services’.

I would back the suggestion above from Andy on remote networking and connecting with the ‘real’ world.

I think there is a big issue (even in my local rural Irish community) getting people involved with interaction via the internet.

~ SMS to Web
~ 2d codes
~ mobile phone micro payments
~ micro-blogging
~ informal education
~ crisis intervention

So any angles on the human/internet interface would interest me. (Darn I may even try and run a session. (Did i say that?))

I see from the lastest post that a “Build a Web App” in a day item is planned. This is something I had kicked around myself, but did not think it was achievable.

Now that I look at it again, I think there may be potential, especially if the above “Build a Web App” in a day is combined with “Build a Web Business” in a day.

It would be a shame if the creativity that is bound to come from the first session, and the unique event that Bar Camp Cork is, was not exploited.

The Build a business session may lead to a decision not to pursue the idea, but at least, it would demonstrate (hopefully) what the process entails.

|So You’ve a website, with plenty traffic.
How do you make money from it? Not conventional banner advertising
- what other revenue streams have you identified?
You’ve a popular social network - or blog - how does it plan to generate revenue?
I’d be interested in hearing / contributing to a discussion/session around this.

I paste below a topic that might (or might not) be of interest…

“Recovering the dream: technology as tool for social and business innovation improvement”

People who were closely involved in the early days of new media introduction (not just web but TV and radio) have in my experience often ended up disappointed with the capacity of the new medium to live up to their hopes for it as a learning medium, let alone as a medium for helping people to achieve a greater degree of personal freedom or meaningful community. In relation to this, apart from asking your advice about promising new technologies that could be pressed into service, I would like to suggest some ideas about an unusual editorial philosophy and a communication format that might (just) deliver some benefits in the domain of social improvement on the one hand, and business innovation improvement on the other. Put simply, you may agree with me that there is a fair amount of nonsense spoken and implemented in this world, that some excellent wise words and deeds tend to get buried thereby, and we often feel largely helpless about this situation, tending to stand aside and go along with things, while sometimes (without realising it), we are actually part of an enormous silent community of common sense. Apart from sharing our experiences (and stories) in this matter, it strikes me that we might be able to share ideas how some of the new communication technologies could be melded together to build a platform for promoting commonsensical approaches to business and social improvement.
